When is sanding worth it?

A wooden floor does not need replacing just because it looks old. In most cases there is healthy wood beneath the worn surface – a full sanding brings it back. Typical signs:

Grey traffic paths

The lacquer has worn through at doors, in the hallway or in front of the sofa; the wood turns grey and absorbs dirt.

Scratches and dents

Chair castors, pets, moves – deep scratches only come out by sanding.

Water and plant-pot stains

Dark rings where water stood. Sanding often does the job; sometimes we replace individual strips.

Old paint on floorboards

Paint or ox-blood layers from past decades – underneath there are usually beautiful pine boards.

Open joints, loose strips

We re-glue, screw down floorboards and close joints before sanding.

A new look

Lighter, darker, more matt, oiled instead of lacquered – sanding is the chance to change the finish.

Which floors we sand

Strip parquet, herringbone, mosaic

The classic in Berlin period buildings. Solid wood, can be sanded many times. We sand herringbone and mosaic in a cross pattern so that nothing tears out.

Old floorboards

Pine and oak boards, also with paint or ox-blood layers. We screw down loose boards, fill wide joints with the 2K adhesive PALLMANN P9 and replace missing pieces.

Plank flooring and engineered parquet

Multi-layer floors can be sanded as long as the wear layer allows. We check this on site before we make an offer.

Industrial parquet

Lamellas glued on edge, very robust – sands well and can be re-oiled or re-lacquered.

Stairs

We sand solid-wood treads by hand and with an edge sander and seal them to match the floor.

How often can parquet be sanded?

That depends on how much wood lies above the tongue. Solid parquet, strip parquet and old floorboards are wood all the way through and can be sanded many times over the decades. With engineered parquet and plank flooring, the thickness of the wear layer decides whether – and how often – sanding is still possible. That is why we look at every floor before making an offer; a threshold, a heating pipe or a skirting board usually tells us enough. If sanding no longer makes sense, we will tell you.

The process step by step

This is how we work on every job – the products come from one Pallmann system so that filler, primer and finish are matched.

  1. 1

    Photos and assessment

A few phone photos are enough. Usually within 48 hours we tell you what is feasible.

  2. 2

    Site visit

Measuring, checking the wear layer, laying out lacquer, oil and colour samples directly on your floor.

  3. 3

    Fixed-price offer

In writing, every item listed. No extras unless you ask for them.

  4. 4

    Covering and coarse sanding

Rooms empty, doors and transitions taped. The coarse sanding takes the old finish down to bare wood.

  5. 5

    Filling

Joints and defects are closed with PALL-X KITT or PALL-X FILLER mixed with the floor’s own sanding dust.

  6. 6

    Fine and edge sanding

Intermediate and fine sanding, edges and corners by hand – for an even look right up to the wall.

  7. 7

    Priming and sealing

Primer (PALL-X 320/325, or 333 to enhance the grain), then two coats of lacquer with intermediate sanding – or two coats of Magic Oil 2K.

  8. 8

    Handover and care

Joint final inspection, and you receive the care instructions for your finish.

Lacquer, oil or colour

Lacquer

A protective film on the wood: easy to care for and hard-wearing – ideal for families, kitchens and hallways. Our standard is PALL-X 96; for the heaviest use PALL-X 98.

Oil

Penetrates the wood, which stays open-pored and feels warm. Small damage can be repaired locally. We oil with Magic Oil 2K.

Colour

With the Pallmann Color Collection we tint anything from a light Scandinavian look to a smoked finish – priming and colouring in one step.

Duration, dust and living at home during the work

How long?

For about 60 m² allow three to four days. Not full working days throughout – but each coat needs its drying time. Two days is not a serious option.

How much dust?

Our sanding machines run with dust extraction – far less dust than most people expect. No job site is dust-free, so we cover up and recommend removing delicate items.

Can I stay at home?

Usually yes. The rooms we work in must be empty; the others remain usable. A freshly sealed floor can usually be walked on carefully the next day, furniture goes back after a few days, rugs after about two weeks.

Furniture?

We take over empty rooms. If you cannot manage that yourself, we clear and refurnish the rooms for an extra charge by arrangement.

Frequently asked questions about parquet sanding

Do I have to move out during the work?

Usually not. The rooms we work in must be empty – the others remain usable. Freshly sealed floors can usually be walked on carefully the next day; furniture goes back after a few days, rugs only after about two weeks.

How much dust does sanding create?

Far less than most people expect: our sanding machines run with dust extraction. No job site is dust-free, so we cover up and recommend removing delicate items from the rooms.

How long does it take to sand and seal 60 m² of parquet?

Allow about three to four days. With lacquer the floor is filled twice, primed and lacquered twice, and each coat must dry. Two days is not a serious option.

How often can parquet be sanded?

Solid parquet and old floorboards many times. With engineered parquet and plank flooring the wear layer decides – we check it on site before making an offer.

Lacquer or oil – which is better?

Both are right; it depends on how you live. Lacquer is easy to care for and resilient, oil feels more natural and can be repaired locally. At the site visit we lay out both on your floor.

Can old floorboards with layers of paint still be saved?

Almost always. We sand off old paint and ox-blood layers, screw down loose boards and replace damaged pieces. Send us photos – we will tell you honestly whether it is worth it.

Can the floor be given a different colour?

Yes. With the Pallmann Color Collection we tint in the same step as priming. We lay out the shades as samples directly on your floor beforehand.

Do I have to move the furniture myself?

We take over empty rooms. If you cannot manage that, we clear and refurnish the rooms for an extra charge by arrangement – just mention it in your enquiry.

Is there a fixed price?

Yes. Based on photos or measurements you receive a written fixed-price offer with every item listed. Payment after handover; for larger projects in instalments according to progress.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

The assessment usually comes within 48 hours. We give you the date for the work together with the offer – realistic, and we keep it.
